Deep Linking: Add Pageviews With Links To Old Posts
Did a story you’ve been covering on your blog just have a major new update? When you post that new news don’t forget your previous post and be sure to link from the new one to the old one! That’s called “deep linking” because you’re linking deep into your site.
Readers will come in looking for information and the more you can provide the more they’ll consume and that means more pageviews and more satisfied readers which means, you guessed it, again more pageviews as they’re more likely to keep coming back to resourceful sites like you want yours to be.
In one of my earlier posts on getting started with a blog I detailed how to select a hosting option for your new site. Within that post I linked back to the post on selecting your domain name when I referenced the previous step in this process. That way, anyone coming in on the latter post could easily find more background information.
Likewise, on my blog network’s movie site, Hollywood Hills, when a new trailer comes out the author can easily link back to the older trailer with a comment on how he feels it is either better or worse than the original.
There are many opportunities for deep linking throughout your blog and search engines love it. Be sure to link with the appropriate anchor text. Anchor text is the portion of text which becomes the link. Don’t say “to watch the old Watchmen trailer – click here“, instead you should have links that say, “I preferred the first Watchmen trailer more than this one.” Anchor text tells the search engine bots what is important here.
Remember: the more you offer your readers, the more they’ll take and that’s exactly what you want.
