Blogger VS Self-Hosted, Amateur VS Professional
So you’ve read about how to register your domain and what you’ll need to start hosting your new site, but you’ve also heard about free services like Google’s Blogspot that will host your site for you. Let me explain why I am against options like Blogger for any sort of a monetized blog.
Blogging for success requires you to establish a certain level of authority on a subject. Readers will find you from links and searches and they’ll absorb your content. If it’s good then they’ll want more and they’ll come back again and again. Problem is, how authoritative does it look when your blog domain name is fluxcapacitorguru.blogspot.com instead of fluxcapacitorguru.com. One looks like a fly-by-night operation with a writer that didn’t care enough to splurge the $8 to register their own domain. The other? Well, serious enough to put in the effort.
If you just want a site to post pictures, send information around to your friends, and then trail off in a few weeks then go with an option like Blogspot. But if you’re serious about wanting to develop a successful, rewarding site then you’re going to need to take the plunge, invest a few dollars, and represent yourself well.
You don’t want to be the guy at the conference handing out business cards with “Printed for Free by VistaPrint” across the back, do you? I didn’t think so.
